Why am I SEO Stoopid?
I am SEO Stoopid as a result of I did not properly take notice of what my stats may have told me.
If I’d have done, I would have noticed one thing sooner and factoring that something into my response would very in all probability have saved me a goodly variety of lost posters and art print sales.
My website is primarily about SEO. I have been doing it since 1996 or thereabouts and have shoppers of many years standing. Halfway through last year, I started adding posters pages to it. It’s restful and unoressured compared with a lot of SEO, plus I wanted to determine how fast I might get unrelated pages indexed and where and with whom, plus unexpectedly I found that I enjoyed doing it, lots of reasons.
When the first two phases of Jagger hit, I was cool. It washed over my seo shoppers the means I expected it to (it had no effects in the slightest degree), and it washed over my (by currently solely mostly) SEO site the manner I expected it to (it had no impact at all there either).
Then came the third wave. Oh pricey!
My web site’s serps (not my clients’ - they are all fine) went into a decline that they still haven’t return out of. I used to be obtaining damp postcards from my serps telling me what depth they were reaching. They told me in one message they’d dived deeper than any known footballers. Imagine! If they ever return make a copy they’ll need time during a decompression chamber before they will surface again.
I made a decision that since I was tanking anyway no-one would be finding my poster pages from the engines and therefore now was the time to hive my poster pages off to their own site, one thing I would been meaning to do for it slow as a website is unlikely to try to to well for 2 such diverse subjects. I got myself a brand new domain for them too, until the day after I have additional time and can settle them down on their own dedicated space - the demand I had for them shows that they deserve it and I’ll be attending to the present within the new Year.
I put them during a very little backwater personal hosting area I have with my Broadband ISP. I have a custom 404 on my main web site and I adjusted it to form it plain to folk that I might moved the posters to a replacement domain as they were swamping my SEO efforts.
Currently I always kept a sensible eye on my stats however I might failed to note that results from Google, these days, aren’t just from Google any more. They are from Google Images too - and despite the actual fact that I would tanked in Google.co etc for text seaarches, unknown to me as my previous stats package didn’t build the excellence, my posters were still terribly terribly well ranked in Google Images. I only found this out by finding out my Google Analytic stats, a service I might solely recently signed up to in anticipation of shoppers expecting me to stay them abreast of Search Engine and SEO events.
I confirmed “Michael Sowa Prints”. I used to be within the 80’s in Google.com but to my amazement I was at positions one and three in Google Images. I tried “Salvador Dali Prints” and “Escher-prints”. Same quite deal, I used to be wealthy the most map and out in the boonies within the text-driven Googles but prime five in Google Images. Go see, they will in all probability still be there even now.
So, what was I to try and do? All those potentially exhausting-to-get serps were going to waste as when individuals didn’t see the result they expected after they clicked through, simply my 404 page (polite though it was) they just went somewhere else.
Hurriedly place all my pages back up again is what I did, and on my SEO site too, thinking to catch what business I will from what’s left of the Christmas rush. I’ve left all of the links to the new site in place as they’ll get folks hopping forwards and backwards from every web site to the opposite, hopefully while not realising. All the posters and art prints, the wall tapestries too, can have to be moved over eventually and on a permanent basis. You can have a web site about SEO or a website that uses SEO to sell posters, you can not, not for any length of your time, have simply the one web site that will both.
Not the method Google are ordering the universe anyway.
I’ll modification over slowly in January using individual 301 redirects and this time they extremely will be permanent.
For now I don’t believe it’s going to matter as Google, consistent with their own stats via Google Sitemaps, have no data concerning the new posters site and given everything else they have on their plate simply currently I don’t suppose they’re going to be indexing it all and handing out a content penalty before I’ve moved everything over permanently.
However observe the sales chance I very nearly missed, eh?
Ethical of the story is, build positive your stats package is the best that it will be. I don’t think I will be using my previous stats package an excessive amount of from now on, however I will keep it on because it does have some individual visitor tracking capabilities that Google’s version of Urchin currently lacks. Reading your stats regularly can save you money and time within the long run.
But do make positive they are as detailed as doable - you may miss vital data if they aren’t! Don’t be an SEO Stoopid!
