X-Men Origins: Wolverine: A film tie-in video game that will blow your mind

Despite the new Marvel adaptation X-men Origins: Wolverine garnering something of a negative critical reception (not forgetting a great deal of scorn from the die-hard Wolverine diehards), the new Wolverine video game looks like it could be the greatest comic book hero movie tie-in-game for a rather long time. Even with the movie playing with comics continuity big-time, the creators of the official X-men Origins: Wolverine movie video game have faced the challenge to get hold of the original source material and make something compelling out of the dire mess of a film. They’ve done a damn good job, too. The end results are there for you all to play for yourself in the new Wolverine video game on the PS3, Xbox and Nintendo Wii.

A Wolverine video game has never really been able to ensnare the essence of the character that legions of comics enthusiasts have enjoyed for decades. However, the new X-men Origins: Wolverine video game does seem to hit the mark, which is impressive seeing as the movie itself seems to have been such a misfire. This could be a very rare event indeed- a licensed video game that is actually much better than the product it is based on.

The first thing you’ll take note of is the strong combat system that the game offers. It does capture some of the adrenaline-fuelled action that being Wolverine would allow you. His mutant healing ability adds another element to events too, and it is nice to see a mainstay of his comic book and movie version recreated so well by the Wolverine video game programmers. Logan’s attributes in this new Wolverine video game constantly heal themselves as you receive damage, but you’ll need to take cover and rejuvenate if your life energy gets too low.

With increasingly intimidating adversaries to battle throughout the game, it becomes an increasingly intense experience the more you play the game. Boasting excellent visuals and audio, it does throw you into the thick of the action, and with so many X-Men comic book characters showing up throughout this Wolverine video game, there is plenty to keep hardcore fans thrilled. Another positive feature of the game-play is the ability to focus on certain aspects of Wolverine’s mutated senses by using the control pad, letting you spot bad guys, doorways and more that you might otherwise miss.

As an overall gaming experience, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game is a big success, serving you all the thrills of the Wolverine film with added cool stuff that the film lacks. With awesome, beautiful graphics and thumping sound design, the game really gets you into the character and his famous berserker rage, and is a more than welcome addition to the roll-call of Marvel Comics tie-in games.
