How Your Hunter Can Dominate PvP Today

Player versus Player (PvP) combat is in your Hunter’s future, even if you’ve avoided it so far. Wrath of the Lich King has brought a new emphasis to World of Warcraft’s World PvP. There’s now a real time PvP battle zone called Lake Wintergrasp. There, the emphasis is on real-time World PvP. In this new zone, players go at it on the live server to earn points they can use to buy rare and valuable items such as the new Heirloom items. These are items that any character in their account from level 1 to 80 and beyond can take advantage of.

Given the popularity of Lake Wintergrasp and the increasing amount of PvP combat in other popular games, you’ll surely see more even more PvP in WoW in the future. So let’s talk about Hunters and PvP:

If you want to be a Hunter in PvP combat, it helps to have the instincts of a hunter. That’s because you’re going to need to be able to identify your prey and understand how it will behave in various situations. You need this knowledge so you can hunt it down and terminate it. You need to understand your own capabilities, your gear, and the tactical situation. Then you need to position yourself and terminate your prey with extreme prejudice before it can take you out. In WoW PvP, it’s much the same, except that your prey is smarter and more cunning than any animal.

However, in Hunter PvP combat, there are issues that no real-world hunter has to deal with. You need to know when and how to deploy your Freezing and Frost Traps and essential crowd control devices is necessary but not enough. You also need to know how to maintain the ideal distance between you and your opponents to cause the most possible DPS damage in each battle. And you must do all this against an intelligent character, rather than a wild animal.

To truly succeed in Hunter PvP combat, you need to know the strategy and tactics for killing each class of opponent. In particular you need to understand how Druids or Warriors or Rogues are likely to come at you. You also need to have a strategy for countering quick charges into hand-to-hand combat range by Warriors and Rogues.

It’s possible to learn what you need to know by putting in enough time in the arena. But from my own personal experience, if you try this you can expect to get defeated regularly and be humiliated for a long time. I spent many frustrating hours ranking last or near last in the standings when I tried. It wasn’t until I picked up a Hunter PvP Guide that I was able to make real progress.
