Poker Has Been Around For Centuries

by Mr. Casino Bonus

Poker and its many variants has been played for over three centuries. It is known to be the oldest game that has lasted with very little change. Throughout time, it has evolved and possibly will remain for centuries more.

Historians claim that three versions of poker have been around for centuries. most historians allege these three countries are the basis of modern day poker Persia as the game of as nas, Germany as pochspiel, and France as poque. Poker’s name derives from the French word poque, which translates to English as “to bluff.”

The origins of the game have been debated for years. No one will ever know exactly from where poker came. However, there is no argument that it is an exciting and fun game to play.

Poker became popular during the Revolutionary War in the United States. The game of choice for soldiers was the version of stud that used only three cards. The five-card version of stud became a useful diversion during the Civil War.

Five-card poker began as a game for four people who were dealt the entire amount of a 20-card deck. This version eliminated the lower cards of a normal 52-card deck. The object of this game was to bet on who would have the best hand.

Once the game incorporated all of the cards in a 52-card deck, popularity grew for the game, which had become more complex. With the lower cards included the possibilities became larger. This popularity brought the game to the forefront rather than just something to pass the time.

It is also believed that poker got its start in New Orleans during the early 1800’s. Then the game expanded up the Mississippi river through riverboats. Gambling has continued to this day on the Mississippi on riverboat casinos.

It is believed that the settlers and gold rush miners brought poker to the west coast in this theory of the evolution of American poker. Offering various versions of poker and its derivatives saloons and casinos were built throughout the west. These movements helped establish poker as an all-American pastime.

Seven-card stud is the most popular version of poker played in modern days. Las Vegas casinos made it famous in recent years. Specially made for the seven-card game called Texas Hold’em, tournaments and tables have been put to good use.

The different versions can be found at any casino and online. The only version that didn’t make it into the pop culture of America is the original three-card version. This version seems to have stayed in the past.

Poker is probably the most exciting of the many things that have lasted throughout time. Its durability and addictiveness proves the longevity of the game thus far. Poker will be around forever while some things may wane with time.

Don’t Tilt

by Robert Shiloh

We’ve all been there. You’ve been very patient, looking for your spot. Then it happens.

You’re sitting with pocket eights and a very loose aggressive player has just raised the pot in front of you. You call, and the flop comes A83. He fires out a pot-sized bet, so you just call.

The turn is a 5. He bets the pot again. You re-raise, and put him all in. He calls instantly and turns over A4. When a 2 hits the river, you are left pulling your hair out.

What you do after that can be the difference between a profitable player and a big loser. Can you stay on your game? Or, does this bad beat freak you out, and get you to make bad plays.

The classic follow up is getting a good, but not great, hand and overplaying it. Like, you have AJ on an A94 board, against a super tight player. He bets the flop, and you go all in, only to get called by his AA, and find yourself drawing dead. Yo top it off, you knew better.

It’s the ability to avoid these reactions to getting unlucky that makes a more profitable poker player. The best solution for avoiding this reaction is to simply get away from the table if you need to. The gamble, and hope to win my money back quick, strategy is a classic tilt.

The best way to avoid a hand like this, right after a bad beat, is to get away from the table as soon as possible. Once you have collected yourself you can go back to playing.

Eventually, you need to become numb to these events. If you played the situation correctly, you did all you could. The bad beats and lucky wins will even themselves out over time. When they do, the best players will have the money.

This type of event is compounded if you’re running bad. When you on a long losing steak it seems that anything you do goes wrong. Opponents make bad calls, and suck out on you.

Your good hands run into better ones. Your opponents make bad calls, and hit their draws. Then, you finally get all you chips in with AA versus 99, only to see two nines hit the flop.

It starts to feel rigged. If you play online, you really know what I mean. The numbers will even out over time. This has to be true. Stop playing if you don’t agree with this statement.

To profit at the tables, you need to play good poker when things are going bad. Things will go bad. If you don’t play well when they are, you give away your profits. Don’t tilt, stay cool and keep your bank roll growing.

How to Excel In Holdem

by Johnny Vegas

Poker is one of the most exciting games available to play. The opportunity to play all the variations of poker comes with knowing the simple rules of the basic game. Each different version has very slight rule changes making playing the game straightforward.

The game play can be taught with very simple steps. No matter how many cards are dealt or how many players are present, the basics of poker apply to all types of the game. The player is able to focus on the more important parts of the game like bluffing, when he knows the basics of the game.

Depending upon table size and the type of game there can be any number of players. However, a dealer must be chosen but the deal can pass to other players, this dealer passes out the cards to the players. The role of the dealer is to decide who won the game and to regulate card deals.

The player to the right of the dealer is the person who cuts the cards and plays first. All the players put an ante into the middle of the table. The players can bet, what is called a blind bet or all players ante, or they can wait for the dealer to begin the game.

The dealer passes out the appropriate number of face down cards and, depending upon the version played, the appropriate number of face down cards. Then the players either bet again or they check showing that they do not want to bet. Checking or passing is a sign that the players do not feel the need to make the pot higher.

Checking or betting is done after each face up card is dealt or after the cards have been exchanged. When betting the players bluff their opponents. Bluffing is betting so that the other players assume you either have a great hand or a very bad hand.

The difference between all other card games and poker is the use of bluffing. Other games use a form of bluffing but poker is the only game that uses cards and bluffing at the same time. Bluffing is an essential part of the game and where it received its name, the French word Poque means to bluff.

Through the game, if one player bets and all the others fold, then the betting player wins the hand. A player calls when they see a bet or raise it. A player folds if they have bet but do not want to continue in the game.

If there are players who wish to see or raise the bet, then, after the last card has been laid out, there is a showdown. This is where all the remaining players flip over their hidden cards to see who won the hand. The highest hand wins the pot and the game starts over again.

Players bet by using chips that represent the money with which they are playing. Once a player has bet all their chips, they have gone “all in.” If they player who has gone all in loses their hand, they are then eliminated from the game.

If you know the basic rules of game play, poker is not a hard game to play. Knowing when to bluff and when to fold your hand is the hardest part of the game. Unless you have developed your talent of bluffing, it is not recommended to use poker as a means of income.

You Can’t Win Without Some Bluffing

by Texas Dolly

Bluffing is a necessary evil in tournament poker. The need to win some pots when you don’t have the cards makes bluffing a requirement to winning events. Below are a couple of types of bluffs.

The bluffs you might see can be as ordinary as an attempt to steal the blinds, to very complex schemes. You’re behind or have no cards, but you want those chips. You need to get a fold.

Stealing the blinds is picking a spot to make a raise with the hope of all remaining players folding. This can be done from any position as long as you are the first to act. When you are a short stack this is usually an all in bet. As a big stack, this can raise will vary to match the situation of the remaining players stacks, and their tendencies.

Another bluff is the check raise bluff. Let’s say you are the big blind. You call a raise from the button with 78 of diamonds the flop comes AJ4 no diamonds.

You check and he bets the pot. You come back with a pot sized, or more, re-raise. If he doesn’t fold, you will stop betting and cut your losses.

The semi-bluff is a little different. You have KQ of hearts. You call a raise from middle position from the big blind.

The flop comes J74 with two hearts. Your opponent raises the pot, representing a big hand, and discouraging drawing for the flush. This can be a good opportunity to push all in.

If he folds, this is fine. If you get called you still can win. You have at least nine outs. This is a typical semi-bluff.

A clever river bluff goes like this. You’ve been calling raises for all three betting rounds. You feel your opponent has a good but not great hand, and is worried about your hand. You have a busted draw.

Now on the river you come out with a small raise. This raise is intended to induce a fold. The small bet is to convince your opponent that you have a huge hand, and have been slow playing it. You need to believe your opponent will think this way.

There are a lot of other bluffs out there. You need to make moves like these, and others, if you want to win tournaments. You have to be able to make chips without the cards sometimes.

Poker Appeals To The Masses

by Robert Eagle

Poker is a card game that seems as though it has been around since before man. You can find it in every era of movies and books. Variations of poker have evolved throughout time.

The three main types of poker are stud, draw, and community poker. In stud and draw poker, the player normally holds all of his cards. The dealer deals the last few cards to the entire group in community poker.

In stud poker, depending upon which type is being played, the dealer passes out the cards either face down or face up. Stud used to be played with either three or five cards but it is only five cards now. This division of poker dates back to the 1700’s when 3-card stud was popular.

In five-card stud, the players bet after the face down cards have been dealt. After each of the last three cards is dealt, another bet is made. The fifth street, or the last card to be dealt, which is the fifth card, is laid out and the final round of betting is made.

Recently, the most popular form of stud has become seven-card stud. Casinos first made seven-card stud popular and now it is available online as well. This version of poker is a fun mixture of stud and community poker.

Community poker is a game where each player is dealt a number of cards and the rest of the cards are dealt to the entire table. The remaining cards are laid out in what is called the window so all players can see them. These final cards are used to create the winning hands.

This type of poker makes bluffing the most essential part of the game. When all the players can see the remaining five cards, they have a good idea of what kind of winning hand can be made. Texas Hold’em is the most popular version of this variation.

Televised games of Texas Hold’em have been made popular by Las Vegas casinos. This version of poker is seven-card stud that continues until all players have been eliminated. This player wins the entire pot of money once they are the last player standing.

The players in regular versions of poker have the option to opt out of the game and walk away with some winnings. Texas Hold’em has a stipulation where you cannot leave the game until you have been eliminated thus losing all of your initial money. The aspect of losing everything is what makes this version so exciting.

The last type of poker is draw poker. In draw poker, the players are dealt five face down cards; the player then can exchange a number of their cards for new ones in hopes of creating a winning hand. Draw is the hardest type of poker, as it does not rely mostly upon talent; a player draws their new cards where the chance of winning is up to luck.

Poker has become one of the most popular gambling games in the nation. The fun of the game is trying to fool your fellow players into thinking you have a better hand than you do, or to get dealt that wonderful hand that will beat all others. No matter what your hand, the best part of poker is the bluffing.

Slow Playing Can Cost You

by Robert Eagle

When you have a big hand, and you check, call, or bet small, you are slow playing your hand. This tactic sometimes pays off big. Generally, this is a dangerous and foolish play that can cost you chips.

I’m not saying that you should never slow play. I do think that you need the right situation to do it. Most players slow play at the wrong times. Let’s look at why you should be careful.

Here is a classic bad slow play. You have AA. It’s early in the tournament and everyone has plenty of chips. You make a small raise looking for action. You get a couple of callers, and the on flop out comes A 6 10 rainbow.

Then you decide to make a small bet to hope for some action. You get one call. The turn card is an innocent looking 9. Again, you bet small, trying to milk this hand.

Then your opponents make a big raise. Convinced he has no idea what you have you happily call. The river is a harmless 2, so you make a bet hoping for a call. Your opponent immediately pushes all in.

Well, you can’t fold, can you? You call, and when he flips over 78 of diamonds, your jaw drops. You’re out of the tournament. Out because you slow played yourself out.

Maybe the first minimum bet was a little wrong. But the small bet on the flop was even worse. Now, when he hits his hand, there’s nothing you can do. You’ve dug your own grave.

Were you just unlucky? Most players just think they got a raw deal. Are they right? Let’s consider this.

All the bets you made were designed to keep players in the hand. By doing so you helped someone hit a long shot. When you call at the end you plan on seeing two pair, or a smaller set. But, when you think about it, these hands would be calling big bets too. You didn’t need to slow play against these hand that you’d beat.

When you get beat by his straight you should see the folly of the slow play. If he had a made hand, as you hoped he had, he would have called a big bet after the flop. A player with a gut shot straight draw should fold. This is even more pronounced if you raise more pre flop. Then when you make a strong bet after the flop it is a lot more chips to risk on a gut shot.

I think we all learn this lesson the hard way, by losing a few hands this way. I’m not saying never slow play, but most of the time it won’t make you more chips. In addition, sometimes you’ll get burned, bad.

Notable Entertainers That Have Had Poker Success

by Hillary Bluff

Poker players have become celebrities. Celebrities are flocking to poker. Let’s look at a few of the celebrities that have had some success at the tables.

Our first celebrity is a surprising one, Jennifer Tilly. The catch here is that her boyfriend is none other than Phil Laak, a top poker player. He has taught Jennifer well. She has cashed in quite a few tournaments, and has won a WSOP bracelet. In 2005 she shocked the poker world winning the ladies only event.

Rock star Sully Erna (Godsmack) has been playing as much as the pros lately. He can’t get enough of the game. He has admitted to changing the bands tour schedule, so he could play in the WSOP. He has cashed in the last two main events at the WSOP.

James Woods is a regular at poker tournaments. Not a very successful player in the tournaments, he loves the action anyway. He is an owner of Hollywood Poker, a popular online poker room.

Ben Affleck, a regular cash game player, had a big win in 2004. He won the California State Championships of Poker main event ($10,000 buy in). He credits top pros Annie Duke, Antonio Esfandaria, and Allen Cunningham with tutoring him.

Not quite the big time movie star as the rest Chad Brown is another actor who plays poker. Well, maybe he is a poker pro who did some acting. With over $2 million in career earnings, he is clearly the best player of the celebrities. He is a regular at the big tournaments these days.

Surprisingly Chad hasn’t won a big event. His closest try was a second place at a WSOP event. He would have loved to have that bracelet. He should get a big win some time soon.

Gabe Kaplan could be called the grandfather of celebrities who play poker. He goes way back to when poker wasn’t the popular game it is now. He was on of the first television commentators for poker.

Gabe started playing in the WSOP way back in 1978. He didn’t get his first cash until 1986. He has reached 6 final tables, including a second place in 2005.

Gabe can still be found doing commentary for poker shows. He is close to the game, is a good player in his own right, and has a quick comedic mind. This makes for a quality voice for poker.

Poker is on the rise. The game is now a mainstream event. The WSOP main event draws the celebrities into the game. They, like everyone else want to take a shot at the pros in the biggest poker event in the world.
